1 And here I am my darling in the great City of New York far far away from you my darling -- but I think about you -- and talk about you to every body who will listen to me -- and I hope before Mr Morgan goes I shall buy some pretty thing to send to you -- -- little Jane wants to see you -- and show you a dancing doll which she has got -- one of the prettiest toys you ever saw -- little Fanny is a perfect beauty -- and 2 most spirited little I wish you her say no you would think she was born to be an Empress -- Little Jane sleeps with me -- but I want my own Kitty for all that -- Do write to me dear whether you have got rid of those nasty H _ _ _ _ _ s -- and how is sweet Charley -- Has he learned any words since I saw him -- don't you let him forget his Aunt Kitty -- write me word how far you have got in your book dear -- little Jane has begun to read Cobwebs 2 but she has not got thro' the first 3 yet -- she is up in room now building with her to sing on -- a illegible -- Jeanie does not know much about trees -- how should she? they don't have many pretty trees in the City --

My darling do write to me -- and remember your own Aunt Kitty that loves you better than she loves herself --

Very poor condition. The top edges both inner and outer are torn badly and look burned.

Miss C M Sedgwick/Stockbridge

1824

Miss Sedgwick/to C M S Jr/Copy

There is no date on the letter. However, based on Sedgwick's New York City location, the references to her nieces Jane/Jennie Sedgwick and Frances/Fanny Sedgwick (born in February 1821 and September 1822, respectively) and nephew Charles/Charley Sedgwick (born in April 1822), Sedgwick's noting of Fanny and Charles learning words, and Jane learning to read, we tentatively date this letter as written in the late fall to spring of 1824-25.

Probably reading primer Cobwebs to Catch Flies by British writer of children's books Lady Ellenor Frere Fenn. The book was first published in 1793 and remained in print until the 1870s. https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780199695140.001.0001/acref-9780199695140-e-1140
